During my time working with chimpanzees and other primates at the Indianapolis Zoo, I contributed to research at the intersection of animal-computer interaction and cognitive enrichment, including the paper “A Computer Vision Pipeline to Augment Touchscreen Tasks for Chimpanzees.” This work was presented at the Animal-Computer Interaction conference and focused on developing and applying computer vision methods to enhance touchscreen-based tasks for chimpanzees, improving how these tasks are delivered and interpreted in a zoo setting.

This collection of poems was born from the landscapes of the John Muir Trail, shaped by long days of walking through granite passes, alpine meadows, and river crossings beneath wide, changing skies. The poems trace both the raw beauty and the unforgiving challenges of these mountains, honoring the physical and emotional demands of moving through such vast terrain. Accompanying each poem is an original artwork, created in dialogue with the text, offering another way to experience the landscapes and emotions held within the work. Together, the poems and artwork reflect layered relationships between place, movement, and perception.
At the same time, the collection confronts the human stories etched into this land, engaging with histories of displacement, exclusion, and resilience that are often overlooked in narratives of wilderness. Throughout the book, I explore the tension between awe and reckoning, how encounters with grandeur can inspire reverence while also calling attention to the histories and responsibilities carried by place. The wilderness becomes a mirror, reflecting both the expansiveness of the human spirit and the weight of collective memory.
My intention is to invite readers to walk these paths for themselves, moving through the book as one might move along the trail, slowly, attentively, and with openness. Through the pairing of poetry and artwork, I hope readers will witness both the fragile brilliance of the natural world and the echoes of injustice that continue to shape it.
